BEGBIE, Hugh Hope Grant
Hugh Hope-Grant Begbie was at born Framsden, Suffolk on 2 April 1886 and baptised at Framsden St Mary church, near Ipswich on 4 July 1886, sixth child of Revd Alfred John Begbie (21 October 1849-27 August 1923) and his wife Mary Constance née Fosbery (29 October 1853-7 December 1949), who married at Milverton, Warwickshire on 8 May 1878. In 1891, Hugh was a 5-year-old, living at The Street, Framsden with his seven siblings, Mary Lucy Emily 11, born Brighton, Grace Constance 10 and Evangeline Agnes both born at East Meon, Hampshire, Isabel Ruth 8 born Hertfordshire, Alfred Vincent 6, Olive Maud 3 and Irene Beatrice 1, all born at Framsden and they were looked after by five indoor servants. By 1901, they had moved to The Rectory, Horton, Chipping Sodbury, Gloucestershire where Hugh's 52-year-old father, Alfred was the local rector. In 1901, Hugh entered St Lawrence College, Ramsgate and in the same year passed his cadetship and in 1903 enlisted in the Royal Navy being promoted Lieutenant in 1909 and in 1911 he was living at Portsmouth. During the First World War a Lieutenant Commander based at the Naval Training Establishment at Shotley, near Ipswich being mentioned in dispatches, retiring with the rank of Commander. A landscape artist in watercolour and exhibited seven works at the Royal Watercolour Society 1932-1935 including in 1932 'Bude', in 1934 'Old Corn Market' and in 1935 'Loading Rubble'. He married at St Mary's Church, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire on 18 December 1937 Ella Millicent Lockwood (27 August 1905-26 April 1993) and they had a daughter Rosemary Georgiana [Campbell]. Hugh Hope-Grant Begbie died at Willow Field, Little Sodbury, near Bristol on 6 October 1964.
