HAMMETT, Leigh
Leigh Richard Hammett was born at Colchester, Essex in 1966, son of Richard Hammett and his wife Rosalie A. née Earnshaw, who married at Colchester in 1963. Leigh married at Ipswich in 1999, Michelle Rose Peartree. A self-trained artist and a painter of bespoke portraits, usually of his own design, and has a clear and uncomplicated vision of his subjects, using fresh and vibrant colours and often giving a meaningful twist to well-known images. His use of media and materials includes charcoal, pencil, ink, and gold leaf but his first love is oil paint, his precise knowledge and recreation of the past masters is displayed in works such as 'The Virgin in Prayer' study, in which he has stayed true to the original 17th century piece, bar the edition of the gold leaf halo. His styles include themed, formal, informal, highly rendered, or loose oil sketches. He lives, works, and draws inspiration from around his home at Brantham, on the Suffolk/Essex border and has exhibited at From the Studio Floor, Studio 3, Ipswich Town Hall Gallery; West Bank Gallery, London and elsewhere.
