KNIGHTS, Arthur William
Arthur William Knights was born at Mutford, Suffolk on 13 July 1901. He married at Mutford in 1926, (Jessie) Jemima Peoples (9 June 1906-1995). In 1939, Arthur was a fisherman and weekly artist, living at Pendene, Prospect Place, Pakefield, Suffolk with his wife Jemima and their daughter Doreem M [Calver], (born 20 March 1927). By the time of the Second World War, with the fishing industry in decline along this stretch of the Norfolk and Suffolk coast, the frequent train connections with London tourists began taking over, enjoying the air and the newly built promenades. They took photographs of the fishermen lolling against their boats with their high Cossack hats, tight Guernsey sweaters, heavy thigh boots with metal cleats. But, like many others with not enough money to live, the fishermen indulged in painting boats and their surroundings, selling them to eke out their weekly wages and Knights was both a fisherman and painter. Arthur William Knights was of 'Pendene', London Road, Kessingland, Suffolk when he died at the Lowestoft & North Suffolk Hospital, Lowestoft on 22 September 1956.
