SMITH, Leonard Edward

Leonard Edward Smith, was born at Kensington, London on 21 July 1896, son of George Edward Smith (1859-1907), surveyor for the G.P.O., and his wife Ada née Bryant (1860-1951), who married at St George's Hanover Square, London in 1884. By 1900 they had moved to Ipswich where Leonard was a 4 year old, living at 181 Norwich Road, Ipswich with his parents, 41 year old George and 41 year old Ada, with three siblings Ruby Ada Mary 11, George Cyril 9, both born at Hammersmith, and Hilda Gladys 1, born at Ipswich. In 1911, Leonard was a 14 year old law clerk, living with his widowed mother, now a boarding house keeper, with siblings Cyril 19, and Hilda 11. Leonard married at Wandsworth, London in 1917, Bertha Amy A. Bode (5 January 1889-1982).Sometime before 1939 he seems to have changed his surname to MacIntyre-Smith and as MacIntyre-Smith in 1939, a portrait painter, living at 19 Kelvin Road, Ipswich with his wife Bertha.
