SMITH, Leonard Edward
Leonard Edward Smith was born at Kensington, London on 21 July 1896, son of George Edward Smith (1859-22 December 1907), a surveyor for the G.P.O., and his wife Ada née Bryant (1860-3 September 1951), who married at St George's Hanover Square, London in 1884. By 1900 they had moved to Ipswich where Leonard was a 4-year-old, living at 181 Norwich Road, Ipswich with his parents, 41-year-old George and 41-year-old Ada, with three siblings Ruby Ada Mary 11, George Cyril 9, both born at Hammersmith, and Hilda Gladys 1, born at Ipswich. In 1911, Leonard was a 14-year-old law clerk, living with his widowed mother, now a boarding housekeeper, with siblings Cyril 19, and Hilda 11. Leonard married at Wandsworth, London in 1917, Bertha Amy Anne Bode (5 January 1889-25 October 1982). Sometime before 1939 he seems to have assumed the name MacIntyre-Smith and as Leonard MacIntyre-Smith in 1939, a portrait painter, living at 19 Kelvin Road, Ipswich with his wife Bertha and daughter Dorothea Louise [Rackham] (16 June 1929-2 March 2008). His date of death was probably 4 November 1981, and his wife Bertha was a widow of Milton Close, 78 Swaffield Road, London SW 18 when she died in 1982.
