LAING, John Fraser

1853 - 1925

John Fraser Laing was baptised at St Cuthbert's, Edinburgh, Scotland on 30 March 1853, son of David Laing, a lawyer's clerk, and his wife Mary née Anderson, who married at Saint Cuthberts, Edinburgh on 6 September 1838. In 1871, John was a 17-year-old apprentice corn factor, living at 5 Randolph Place, St George, Edinburgh with his parents, 66-year-old David and 59-year-old Mary, with siblings Christina 29, Francis Holborne 27 and Ann Williamson 23, all born in Edinburgh. John married in Midlothian, Scotland on 7 January 1884, Agnes Young and in 1891, a 38-year-old artist landscape painter, living at Mount Pleasant, Duddington, Portobello, Midlothian, Scotland, with his 37-year-old wife Agnes and their two children Thomas Young (1884-1911), who was born in Scotland and Edith May (1889-1920), born at Lowestoft in Suffolk. Noted in Kelly’s Suffolk Directory 1896-1900, as an artist at 1 Caroline Terrace, Church Road, Lowestoft, Suffolk. Around 1900 the family emigrated from Suffolk to Boston, Massachusetts, USA and seem to have ended up in Canada but returned to Scotland. John Fraser Laing died at Portobello, Midlothian, Scotland on 3 February 1925.
