1825 - 1881

John Harris, was born at Whepstead, Suffolk on 21 April and baptised at St Petronilla Church, Whepstead, on 12 June 1825, son of John Harris, a shoemaker, and his wife Mary née Merton (1797-1866). In 1841, a 16 year old apprentice to George Fitch, grocer & draper at Bures, Suffolk, but by 1851, a 25 year old artist, living at Causeway, Monks Eleigh, Suffolk with his parents, 60 year old John, now a miller, and 55 year old Mary, with six siblings, Joseph 28, Elizabeth 24, Harriet 22, Samuel 20, Clarissa 16 and Henry 12, all born at Whepstead. In 1861, their address is given as High Street, Monks Eleigh and his father, now a millier, died on 6 March 1867, aged 76, and in 1871 young John, now head of the family at Back Lane, Monks Eleigh when John was still recorded as an artist. He died at The Mills, Monks Eleigh on 12 January and was buried at Monks Eleigh on 18 January 1881, aged 55.
