CHAPMAN, Elizabeth Maria

1874 - 1942

Elizabeth Maria Chapman, sometimes Maria Elizabeth Chapman, was born at 98 Bishop Street, Moss Side, Chorlton, Manchester, Lancashire on 28 May 1874 and baptised on 21 June 1874, daughter of Josiah Thomas Chapman (1843-28 June 1907), a photographic chemist, and his wife Elizabeth née Gardner (1844-1910), who married at St Mark's, Myddleton Square, London on 28 November 1871. Elizabeth studied at Manchester School of Art and portrait painting privately under Reginald Barker. An oil and watercolour artist and a lithographer and was secretary of Manchester Academy of Fine Arts and formerly Hon. Sec. and Treasurer of the Attic Club and Manchester Society of Women Artists 1918-1926. As Miss Elizabeth M. Chapman she exhibited at the Ipswich Fine Art Club from 'Staverton', 16 Alexandra Road South, Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester in 1923 a lithograph 'Sylvia'. She also exhibited at Manchester, London, Liverpool, Southport, and Newcastle-on-Tyne. Elizabeth was of 16 Alexandra Road South, when she died at Doriscourt, Upper Chorlton Road, Chorlton-cum-Hardy on 18 March 1942, aged 67. She signed her work 'E. M. Chapman'.
