Doug Selway

Douglas Charles Selway was born in Essex in 1950, son of Sidney Douglas Selway (22 December 1915-17 April 2003) and his wife Kathleen Hilda née Shakespeare (1923-1989), who married in Essex in 1947. Douglas studied at Westminster Kingsway College in London and was an art tutor in London and a freelance artist since early 1990 and full-time professional artist from 2001, mostly prop-making a wide range of community arts such as carnival, theatre, and puppet projects, also studio-based teaching. Douglas Selway married at Islington, London in 2000, Susi Hines, a jewellery designer, and they lived at Denman House, California Road, Manningtree, Essex. They later lived in an 18th Century town house in a pretty Suffolk village and converted the garage space for Doug's studio which is full of extraordinary surreal sculptures with words and sketches scrawled on the walls and ceilings. Doug has had mixed exhibitions at Reunion Gallery, Felixstowe; Brighton Art Fair; Twelve Printmakers12PM; Old Fire Engine House Gallery, Ely and his solo shows include Key Arts Group, Ipswich; Annex Gallery Fairbanks, Alaska; Minories, Colchester; Gainsborough's House Museum and Gallery, Sudbury; Jaywick Martello Tower and many other venues.
