BUTLER, Bérénice

1901 - 1965

Bérénice Butler was born at Dunedin, New Zealand on 25 September 1901, daughter of artist George Edmund Butler, and his first wife Sarah Jane née Popplestone (1868-15 March 1928), who married at Lyndhurst, Hampshire on 29 April 1899. In 1911, Bérénice was a 9-year-old, living at Eastfield Road, Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol with her parents, 39-year-old George and 40-year-old Jane, with her sibling brother, Joseph Brian 4, who was born at Weedon, Buckinghamshire and they had a visitor, 23-year-old art student Julia Daniels, who was born in Chicago, USA. Bérénice exhibited at the Ipswich Art Club from 'Popplestones', Trimley, near Ipswich in 1927 an oil, 'A Suffolk Punch from Mr C. C. Smith's Farm' and a watercolour 'Jane Eyre' and in 1931 her work 'The Lamb of God' was used in Christmas Cards for the Medici Society. Bérénice married as his second wife, at Brentford, Middlesex in 1936, Guy Richard Bisby (17 August 1889-3 September 1958), his first wife was Helen Hitchcock who died in Manitoba, Canada in 1920. In 1939, Bérénice 'formerly an artist' was living at 8 Cross Deep Gardens, Twickenham, Middlesex with her husband Guy Bisby, 'assistant at the Commonwealth Mycological Institute in Kew', who died at 77 Chertsey Road, Egham, Surrey in 1958. Bérénice Bisby was of 'Marizion', Thame Road, Long Crendon, Buckinghamshire, when she died at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Buckinghamshire on 8 November 1965, aged 64. She signed her work 'B. Butler' block letters.
