CROSS, Robert Victor

1909 - 1942

Robert Victor Cross was born at 31 Lawson Road, Lowestoft, Suffolk on 6 July 1909, son of Robert John Cross (25 March 1878-23 April 1951), a journeyman baker, and his wife Ellen née Jackson (19 December 1877-21 December 1962), who married at Kirkley St Peter & St John Church, Lowestoft on 8 June 1908. In 1911, Robert was a 1-year-old, living at Lawson Road, Lowestoft with his parents, 33-year-old Robert and 33-year-old Ellen. Robert became a pupil at Lovewell School on 20 April 1914 and then a student at the Ipswich School of Art. Robert enlisted in the Suffolk Regiment and was subsequently transferred to the Queen’s Own (Royal West Kent Regiment) and Robert was reported missing, during the Battle of Alam el Halfa, on 4 September 1942 and later it was concluded that he had been killed in action on 3-4 September 1942. A set of his works were exhibited at the Ipswich Art Club exhibition in 1943.
