PAYNE, Edward Stanning

1851 - 1937

Edward Stanning Payne was born at High Street, All Saints, Oxford in 1850, second son of William Payne (c.1815-20 February 1882), an upholsterer, and his wife Emma née Davis, who married at Oxford on 3 June 1841. In 1851, Edward was a newly born, living at High Street, Oxford with his parents, 35-year-old William and 32-year-old Emma, with two siblings, William Edward 8 and Lucy Jane 2, and they retained two indoor servants. Edward married at St Martin-in-the-Fields, Trafalgar Square, London on 4 October 1874, Emily Rose Wells (10 June 1852-1937), fourth daughter of Thomas Wells, jeweller, of Sidney Street, Cambridge. In 1881, a 28-year-old surgeon's assistant, living at Cow Lane, Ely St Mary, Cambridgeshire with his 28-year-old wife Emily, and their four daughters, Constance 6, born at Hammersmith, London, Lillian 4, Etheldreda 3 and newly born Louisa, all born at Ely, and they were still there ten years later with the addition of two sons Hugh, born 1885 and Harold born 1891. Edward exhibited at the Ipswich Fine Art Club from Waterloo Cottage, Ely in 1882, two oil paintings 'Catherine Chapel, Ely Cathedral' and 'Queen Anne's Ride, Windsor Park'. Edward seems to have had several occupations, including surgeon's assistant, dental surgeon, tobacconist, and running a confectionery business, the latter two from the Old Dispensary on St Mary's Street, Ely. In 1911, Edward was a 60-year-old 'maker of artificial teeth', living at 108 Chesterton Road, Cambridge with his 58-year-old wife Emily, and two unmarried children, Lillian Alice 34 and Harold Edward Arthur 20 and in 1921 was a dental practitioner living at 28 Station Road, Cambridge. His wife Emily died at 39 High Street, Haverhill, Suffolk on Good Friday in March 1937, aged 84, and Edward Stanning Payne followed in the middle of the same year, aged 86.
