Francis Henry Huntington

Francis Henry Huntington was born at Boulogne-sur-Mer, France on 7 May1824 and baptised at the English chapel, Boulogne on 4 July 1824 but had also been baptised at Holy Trinity church, Winterton, Norfolk on 13 June 1824, son of John Barker Huntingdon (c1774-9 December 1832), of Somerton Hall, Norfolk and his wife Isabella née Hethersett (1772-1866), who married at Shropham, Norfolk on 21 August 1813. Francis married at Wanstead, Essex on 3 December 1846, his cousin Amelia Hemsworth (6 May 1815-1878), eldest daughter of Henry D'Esterre Hemsworth (1790-1850) of Shropham Hall, Norfolk, and their eldest son Francis D‘Esterre, born at St Leonard’s-on-Sea on 11 November 1847 was baptised at Shropham, Norfolk on 21 February 1848 but died on 21 November 1857, their second son Alfred Kirby, was born at Ipswich on 18 January 1852. In 1851, Francis was a landscape artist, living at Wherstead Road, Halifax, Stoke, Ipswich but by 1861, a 36-year-old ‘proprietor of houses’, living at Totteridge Lodge, Totteridge, Barnet, Hertfordshire with his 46-year-old wife and son Alfred Kirby. A stalwart in the 12th Middlesex Rifle Volunteer Corps and Ensign in 1861 being promoted Lieutenant in 1867. In 1871, Francis was a 46-year-old artist, living at 3 Lawn Road, Hampstead and where Amelia died in 1878, aged 64. Francis exhibited at the Royal Academy and twenty-nine works at the Royal Society of British Artists 1851-1878, including watercolours of the Dorset countryside and views in Devon, Surrey, and North Wales. He was of Mervill Hill, Hambledon when he died at Hugh Town, St Mary's, Scilly Isles, Cornwall on 16 August 1895, aged 71. His son Professor Alfred Kirby Huntington (1852–1920), was professor of metallurgy, author, and aviation pioneer. Information from Thomas Wormald's 'History of the Family'.
