JOHNSON, Charles Edward Bennington
Charles Edward Bennington Johnson was born at Tulse Hill, Surrey in 1866, son of Robert Johnson (30 August 1836-27 August 1901), a civil engineer, manufacturer and merchant, and his wife Eliza née Miller, who married at Paddington Parish Church, London on 16 January 1861. In 1871, Charles was a 4-year-old, living at Oatlands Drive, Walton-on-Thames, Surrey with his parents, 34-year-old Robert, who was born at Starston, Norfolk and 35-year-old Eliza, who was born at Tunstall, Suffolk with five siblings, Ethel 8, Constance Marion 6, George 5, Ernest 2 and newly born son Jo, all born in Surrey, and they retained four indoor servants. In 1881, Charles was a 13-year-old student, living with his 50-year-old widowed aunt, Sarah Wilson who was born at Framlingham, Suffolk, at Ford Cottage, Birkbeck Road, Streatham, Wandsworth, London. Charles married by licence at Woodbridge Registry Office, Suffolk on 15 April 1890, Alice Mary Pottle (1866-) and in 1891, a 25-year-old marine painter, living at River View Terrace, Sandy Lane, Woodbridge, Suffolk with his 24-year-old wife Alice, who was born at Hollesley, Suffolk and their newly born daughter Ida Mary Benington, who was born at Ipswich, who became a much-married actor. In 1901, Charles was a 34-year-old artist painter, still at the same address with the two further daughters Gladys Marion 7 and newly born Vera Benington [Curjel]. In 1911, an artist painter, still living at Woodbridge with his wife and three of his four daughters, Ida, Vera and Ivy [Angrave] 8 and in 1921 'an out of work' artist painter, but working at Martlesham Heath Aerodrome, Suffolk and living at 1 River View Terrace, Woodbridge, with his wife Alice Mary and unmarried daughter Vera Bernice 20. Charles Edward Bennington Johnson died at Woodbridge in 1937, aged 70 and was buried in St Mary church burial ground, Martlesham, Suffolk.
