CHURCHYARD, Emma
Emma Churchyard was born at Well Street, now Seckford Street, Woodbridge, Suffolk and baptised at St Mary's Church, Woodbridge on 26 May 1828, one of the several artist children of Thomas Churchyard and his wife Harriet Hailes (1797-1865), daughter of Lieut George Hailes R.N., of Henley, near Ipswich. In 1851, 22-year-old Emma, was living at Cumberland Street, Woodbridge with her parents, Thomas 53 and Harriet 53, with six siblings, five sisters Ellen 24, Laura 21, Anna 19, Elizabeth 16 and Charles 9. Although she painted little was, like most of her kin, a very competent artist. Emma Churchyard died at Woodbridge in August 1878, aged 50, like her sisters she was unmarried.
