KIBBLE, Sally

1955 - 2009

As Sally Ann Hill, she was born at Woodbridge, Suffolk in April 1955, daughter of Robert George Hill (25 March 1923-6 November 1995) and his wife Dorothy Pansy H. née Barham (6 June 1924-1994), who married at Woodbridge in 1948. After obtaining an 'A' level in English Sally seemed likely to study sculpture at the Slade School of Fine Art in London but instead, decided to join the occupational therapy department of an Ipswich psychiatric hospital. She married in 1978, David John Kibble (August 1944-30 August 2014) and painted under the name of Sally Kibble. Whilst working as a craft instructor, Sally was selling her etchings of Suffolk churches through galleries and bookshops and was commissioned to paint studies of houses. She worked in her husband's plastics company, Skar Precision Moulding, based in Hadleigh, Suffolk, and set up her own catering company. Sally gained an Open University degree in literature and history and commenced her literary career, publishing 'Beef on the Bone' (2001) and 'Sowl Searching' (2004) which is set in Southwold. Sally and her husband amassed what became the largest private collection of Churchyard paintings and drawings and Sally set to work on a fictionalised account of the family and 'The Artist's Daughter' was published in 2008. In the late 1990s the Kibbles relocated to Southwold, which for many years, had been their holiday home. There Sally painted topographical watercolours and her splendid panorama of South Green is now in the town museum. Sally Ann Kibble unfortunately succumbed to her cancer and died on 16 December 2009, aged just 54. The family collection of Churchyard paintings was sold by auction by Durrants of Beccles in June 2015.
