ROWNEY, George
George Rowney was baptised at St Andrews, Holborn, London on 16 April 1792, son of Thomas Rowney and his wife Ann. An honorary member of the Ipswich Society of Professional & Amateur Artists from 1834 but only to sell his artist's materials. He married at Bath Abbey, Somerset, in November 1813, Esther Forster (c.1790-1865). In 1851, a 60-year-old artists colourman, living at Ampthill Square, St Pancras, London with his 61-year-old wife Esther, born Bath their 30-year-old son Frederick, and 4-year-old grandson, also Frederick. His wife Esther died in 1865 and George Rowney was of Rathbone Place, Oxford Street and of Percy Street, Tottenham Court Road, when he died at 57 Oakley Square, St Pancras all in London on 22 November 1870, aged 77. The Rowney Company was established in 1783 when Richard and Thomas Rowney moved to central London and opened premises selling perfumes and wig powder, the wearing of wigs became unfashionable when the Rowney's re-focused their activities and concentrated upon producing artists' colours. They achieved notable success, supplying famous artists such as Constable and Turner. Indeed, Turner was a family friend for whom the company became the appointed official lithographers. About 1832, the business became known as George Rowney & Co. During the 19th and 20th centuries, the Rowney Company relocated around London many times and throughout this time accomplished numerous improvements in the manufacture and production of oil and watercolour.
