William May

William May was born at Coggeshall, Essex on 24 June 1794 and baptised at Playford, Ipswich on 6 July 1794, one of the several children of Jonathan May (c1760-1837) and his wife Ann Horrocks née Rutt (1762-) who married at St Andrew by the Wardrobe with St Ann Blackfriars, London on 8 August 1782. A member of the Ipswich Society of Professional & Amateur Artists from 1834, where he was tutored by Henry Davy. In 1841, a merchant, living in Norwich Road, Ipswich and was Mayor of Ipswich 1842/3. William May, a merchant, and an Ipswich Dock commissioner, died at Ipswich on 2 May 1849 and was buried at Tacket Street Congregational church, Ipswich on 5 May 1849, aged 54, and his will 'William May, Merchant of Ipswich, Suffolk' was proven on 5 June 1849.
