MILLER, Mark Wayne
Mark Wayne Miller was born in Quarryville Borough, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, United States in 1938, son of Mark Miller (born 1894) and his wife Ruth. Mark trained at the Philadelphia College of Art and at Temple University and came to England in 1967. In 1971 he married Margaret [Margi] Blunden, eldest daughter of author Edmund Blunden (1896-1974) and his wife Claire née Poynting, who married in 1945 and the Miller's came to live with Blunden at Hall Mill, Long Melford, Suffolk. Mark fell in love with Hall Mill and the Suffolk countryside, describing it as atmospheric, subtle, filled with beautiful light. As an artist he was not interested in American landscape because of its vastness, finding it difficult to distil local, distinctive landscape in a single picture. His coming to England gave him a new muse finding the landscape of this country more diverse and inspiring. His English influences include Henry Edmund Cotman, John Crome (1768-1821) and particularly Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851) for his use of wonderful colour and light and of course John Constable for the way that he captured the essence of landscape, especially that of Suffolk. Mark taught art and was later Head of Department at Ipswich School of Art and at Suffolk College, Ipswich and was a founder member of the [[8+1 Suffolk Group,4380]] and many of his paintings now hang on the walls of Blunden and Miller family homes. Mark Wayne Miller died at Ipswich on 10 April 2014.
