Birkin Anthony Christopher Haward was born at Ipswich in September 1939, son of Birkin Haward and his wife Muriel née Wright (1917-1955), who married at Holborn, London in 1936, into a family where drawing and painting were regular activities. His father, Birkin Haward was an architect, painter and antiquarian and his mother Muriel was also a fine draughtsman and taught textile design at Ipswich School of Art. A practising architect, young Birkin trained at the Architectural Association School in London 1958-1963 and worked with [Lord] Norman Foster for many years, including on the Willis Faber building in Ipswich. Birkin married at St Pancras, London in 1977, Joanna van Heyningen and since 1983 has been in partnership with Joanna, as van Heyningen and Haward in London, working on heritage, education and performance projects, a book of their work 'Buildings and Projects' was published by Right Angle Publications in 2010. Since resuming painting full time, he has exhibited at the Beardsmore Gallery, 23 Quadrant Grove, London 2012-2016.
