HAYES, Margaretta Emily

1870 - 1958

As Margaretta Emily Carden Roe, she was born in Kanly, Sri Lanka on 14 September 1870, daughter of William Carden Roe (1834-1922) and his wife Emily Louisa née Layard (1845-1894) and the niece of Dr Harold Muir Evans, MD (1866-1947) and his wife Violet née Reid, who came to practice in Lowestoft in 1894, the year of the death of her mother. Margaretta married at Branksome Park, Dorset on 9 April 1907, George Theodore Whitfield Hayes (22 December 1871-15 February 1958), barrister-at-law, and they had two daughters. In 1911, Margaretta was a 40 year old, living at 7 Carlton Mansions, Holland Park, Kensington, London with her two daughters Margaretta Rowena Marion Whitfield Hayes [Barrington] (4 June 1908-20 September 1962) and Joanna Emily [Leigh] (8 October 1909-April 1999) and they retained two indoor servants, her husband was absent. In 1911, Dr Harold Muir had another of his nieces, 12 year old Aileen Mary Hayes, 'resident at Maskelyn, Ceylon' also born at Sri Lanka, living with him at The Turret House, Kirkley Cliff, Lowestoft from where Margaretta exhibited at Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool in 1924. In 1939, Margaretta was living at 'Fingal', Burwood Park Road, Walton-on-Thames, Surrey with her husband George and married daughter Rowena Margaretta [Barrington]. Margaretta was of 29 Sheffied Terrace, Kensington, London when she died at the West London Hospital, Hammersmith, London on 19 January 1958, aged 87. They were sometimes known at Whitfield-Hayes.
