HAYES, Margaretta Emily

1870 - 1958

As Margaretta Emily Carden Roe, she was born in Kanly, Sri Lanka on 14 September 1870, second daughter of William Carden Roe (30 November 1833-8 October 1922), deputy surgeon general, and his wife Emily Louisa née Layard (9 January 1843-11 August 1894) and was the niece of Dr Harold Muir Evans, MD (1866-1947), who came to practice in Lowestoft in 1894, the year of the death of her mother. Margaretta married at All Saints' Church, Branksome Park, Bournemouth, Dorset on 9 April 1907, George Theodore Whitfield Hayes (22 December 1871-15 February 1958), a barrister-at-law, and they had two daughters. In 1911, Margaretta was a 40-year-old, living at 7 Carlton Mansions, Holland Park, Kensington, London with her two daughters Margaretta Rowena Marion Whitfield Hayes (4 June 1908-20 September 1962) and Joanna Emily [Leigh] (8 October 1909-April 1999) and they retained two indoor servants, her husband was absent. In 1911, Dr Harold Muir had another of his nieces, 12-year-old Aileen Mary Hayes, 'resident at Maskelyn, Ceylon' who was also born at Sri Lanka, living with him at The Turret House, Kirkley Cliff, Lowestoft from where Margaretta exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery in 1924. In 1939, Margaretta was living at 'Fingal', Burwood Park Road, Walton-on-Thames, Surrey with her husband George and married daughter Rowena Margaretta [Barrington]. Margaretta Emily Carden Hayes was of 29 Sheffield Terrace, Kensington, London when she died at the West London Hospital, Hammersmith, London on 19 January 1958, aged 87. They were sometimes known at Whitfield-Hayes.
