LAKER, Bertie

1870 - 1889

Albert Tenterden Laker was born at Ipswich on 2 September 1870, son of Abbott Thomas Laker (1831-1873), a master mariner, and his wife Hellen née Tungatt (1828-April 1899), who married at Poplar, London in 1858. His father Abbott was master of the merchant vessel 'Mary E. Ray' when he died at sea on 30 April 1873. In 1871, Albert was a newly born, living at Tyler Street, Ipswich with his mother, 31-year-old [sic] Hellen, who was baptised at Colchester, Essex on 7 December, 1828 and his siblings, Lucy Nellie Harriet Elizabeth 12, Abbott William Edward Gebhard 10, who were both born at Colchester and John Dickson Charles 7, who was born at Croydon and Alfred 5, who was born at Ipswich. Known as Bertie, he studied at Ipswich School of Art and passed his drawing examinations in 1888. Albert Tenterden Laker was buried in Ipswich Cemetery on 12 April 1889.
