Clare Waterer

Clare A. Waterer was born at Belchamp Walter, Sudbury, Suffolk around 1978, daughter of Swithin Anthony Waterer, a farmer, and his wife Sandra M. née Brown, who married at Braintree, Essex in 1976. Having grown up in the countryside surrounded by horses and animals, Clare started sketching at a young age and having studied art at school, she went on to work in dressage, showing, and point to point yards, before discovering the racing world at Newmarket. Clare worked at different pre-training yards before moving on to stud work, which has enabled her to study horses of all different ages. Her love of thoroughbreds is evident in the artwork she now produces works in pastel and graphite but is happy with other mediums and specialises in horses and pet portraits. When working on commissions, she likes to find out as much as she can about the animal, which enables her to portray its specific character and personality. On other art projects, she starts by determining what she wants to portray in the picture which could be the cheekiness of a foal, the power and strength of a stallion or the way the light is reflected in an animal’s coat, which then forms the basis of her painting. A member of the Society of Equestrian Artists and of Suffolk Open Studios from Clare Park Visitor Centre, Malting Lane, Clare, Sudbury.
