Nick Sharratt

Nicholas J. Sharratt was born at Bexleyheath, Greater London on 9 August 1962, the eldest of the four children of Michael J. Sharratt (born 1936), a brewery worker, and his wife Jill Alexandra née Davison (born 14 July 1937), a teacher and social worker, who married at Portsmouth in 1959. Nick grew up in Suffolk, Nottinghamshire, and Greater Manchester. After primary school he had two years at a comprehensive and then moved to a grammar school. On leaving he took an art foundation course at the now Manchester Metropolitan University then then attended St Martin's School of Art in London, studying graphic design for three years also learning design and typography. Leaving St Martin's in 1984, together with his folio of drawings, he toured publishers and obtained commissions working as a freelance illustrator. His work originally involved drawing for a wide range of magazines, including homes, business, cars, parenting, computers, gardening, fitness, cooking, fashion, puzzles, teenagers, also designing packaging for cakes and confectionery. He then commenced book illustration, with his first works being educational textbooks but after a couple of years, in 1987 he was to illustrate his first picture book 'Noisy Poems'. Continuing with his book illustrations but began authoring his own books and in the mid 1990s concentrated solely on children's books. He has now illustrated over 250 books, ranging from board books for babies to novels for young teenagers, working with authors such as Julia Donaldson, Jeremy Strong, Michael Rosen, Giles Andreae, Kaye Umansky, Kes Gray and notably Dame Jacqueline Wilson also writing over forty of his own works. He donated to the 'Westhall Secret Postcard Auction' in 2013 'Sockish Pony' from his picture book 'Socks'.
