GOWERS, Percival Barton

1889 - 1965

Percival Barton Gowers was born at Ipswich on 29 October 1889 and baptised in December 1889, son of Arthur Gowers and his wife Edith née Barton (22 December 1867-1956), who married at Ipswich in 1889, Percival was a brother to Cyril Gowers. Percy was a foreman engineer in the lawnmower factory of Ransomes, Sims of Ipswich. An amateur painter in oil and watercolour mostly of landscapes and was a member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1920-1965 exhibiting twenty-three works 1919-1945, from Ipswich. Titles include in 1923, two oils 'When Lingering Daylight welcomes Nights Fair Queen' and 'The Passing Cloud', in 1928 an oil ‘A Path to the Sea’ and a watercolour ‘Clearing after Rain’, in 1944 'View of the River Orwell' and 'End of the Day' and in 1945, a watercolour ‘Where the Waters Gently Pass'. He married at Ipswich in 1919, Cissie Elizabeth Durrell (1894-1969) and had two daughters. In 1939, Percival Barton Gowers was an erector of flour milling machinery, living at 47 Belle Vue Road, Ipswich with his sister Cissie, and where he died on 24 September 1965, aged 75.
