POND, Sandra
As Sandra M. Burl, she was born in the Gipping district of Suffolk in 1954, daughter of Bernard Terry Burl (21 July 1921-8 September 1992) and his wife Marjorie née Welham (5 July 1925-26 November 2005). Sandra married at Needham Market, Suffolk in 1974, David G. A. Pond and paints under the name of Sandra Pond. Sandra studied at Norwich School of Art from where, on graduating in 1977, she received the annual award for outstanding achievement. A Licentiate the Society of Industrial Artists and works as a professional artist. Known by publishers worldwide for her richly detailed and accurate botanical and wildlife illustrations, Sandra has also illustrated many children's books in wide ranging subjects such as gardening, cookery, architecture, do-it-yourself, biology, fantasy, and sport. Sandra is based near the Suffolk coast where her studio at Woodbridge provides a base for both her artwork and private tuition. Her recent artwork has moved away from the detail and accuracy required for illustration and has been working in watercolour and acrylics on wildlife subjects on a larger scale introducing an element of fantasy to landscape scenes that she finds interesting and inspiring. Sandra exhibits regularly at exhibitions in Suffolk including at the Edmund Gallery, Bury St Edmunds; National Horseracing Museum at the Palace House Gallery, Newmarket; Thompson's Gallery, Aldeburgh and in Norwich at The John Innes Institute; St Andrews Hall and the Assembly House Norwich. She enjoys teaching and undertakes evening and afternoon watercolour classes for beginners and intermediate painters, and day workshops throughout Suffolk.
