Sandra D Pond was born in Norfolk in 1956, daughter of Raymond Arthur Charles Pond (13 March 1927-15 February 2011) and his wife Beryl Evelyn Pond (30 July 1930-15 November 2015), who married in Norfolk in 1951. Sandra studied at Norwich School of Art from where, on graduating in 1977, she received the annual award for outstanding achievement. A Licentiate of the Society of Industrial Artists and works as a professional artist. Known by publishers worldwide for her richly detailed and accurate botanical and wildlife illustrations, Sandra has also illustrated many children's books in wide ranging subjects such as gardening, cookery, architecture, do-it-yourself, biology, fantasy, and sport. Sandra is based near the Suffolk coast where her studio at Woodbridge provides a base for both her artwork and private tuition. She married at Norwich in 1986 Peter Tobin, and they had one son, Liam Noel Tobin, she married secondly in Suffolk in 2003 David Batchelor (1941-2005), a sound recordist. Her recent artwork has moved away from the detail and accuracy required for illustration and has been working in watercolour and acrylics on wildlife subjects on a larger scale introducing an element of fantasy to landscape scenes that she finds interesting and inspiring. Sandra exhibits regularly at exhibitions in Suffolk including at the Edmund Gallery, Bury St Edmunds; National Horseracing Museum at the Palace House Gallery, Newmarket; Thompson's Gallery, Aldeburgh and in Norwich at The John Innes Institute; St Andrew's Hall and the Assembly House Norwich. She works from her studio in Leiston which overlooks her the garden and enjoys teaching and undertakes evening and afternoon watercolour classes for beginners and intermediate painters, and day workshops throughout Suffolk. Sandra has completed a book for Princeton University Press 'Insect Architecture' (2025).
