THURSTON, John Hannington
John Hannington Thurston was born at Ipswich in 1864, son of John Thurston (1819-1866), of Her Majesty's Yacht Victoria and Albert, and his wife Elizabeth (Bessie) Mary Hannington, eldest daughter of Charles Smith Hannington of Hurstpierpoint, Sussex, who married at St George's Hanover Square, London on 19 November 1861. His father John Thurston died at Islington, London in 1866 and in 1869 his mother Elizabeth, remarried at Brighton, Charles Smith. In 1871, John was a 6-year-old, living at Rose Villa, Keymer, Sussex with his stepfather, 32-year-old Charles H. Smith, a wine merchant, and his 30-year-old mother Elizabeth, his 4-year-old sister Beatrice Mary Hannington Thurston (1866-1872), also born at Ipswich and 10-month-old stepsister Bessie May Smith. By 1881, young John was a 16-year-old and learning the wine business, and the enlarged family were now living at High Street, Henfield, Steyning, Sussex. In 1891, a 26-year draper's clerk, living at Whaphams, Henfield, Sussex with his stepfather Charles, now a retired wine merchant, his 50-year-old mother Elizabeth and step siblings Bessie May 20, Minnie Dora 19, Blanch Emily 17, all born at Brighton and Charles Lawrence 12, born at Henfield. In 1901, John was a 35-year-old artist (painter), lodging at Tregenna Place, St Ives, Cornwall and married at Redruth, Cornwall in 1904, Annie Morrisset (1878-1938) and in 1911 they were living at 113 Glendower Road, Plymouth. In 1921 he was an insurance agent living at 102 Tavistock Place, Plymouth with his wife Annie and their 12-year-old daughter Beatrice Maud. John Hannington Thurston died at Plymouth, Devon in 1928, aged 63.
