Marchela Dimitrova

Matushka Marchella Dimitrova was born in Bulgaria in 1956 and is married to a Bulgarian Orthodox Priest. Marchela has bachelor & master’s degree of icon painting & church wall painting, of Academy of Music Dance & Fine Arts in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. An icon artist, she studied for two years with a master and awarded the title of master-iconographer. Her interest in icons began in 1996 and, working in the traditional Byzantine style, she uses traditional Byzantine techniques painting in egg tempera and using twenty-four carat gold-leaf. The roots of the icon do not lie in art, they lie in the spiritual realities at the heart of the Christian faith. Because every formal aspect of an icon has a spiritual significance the traditional rules must be strictly followed. Iconography is now rightly acclaimed as one of the significant art forms of the European spirit and, the sole pictorial form of sacred art in the Christian tradition. Her work appears in a considerable number, mostly Orthodox but including Protestant and Catholic, churches and monasteries around the world. The haloes are always gilded with the panels made from various kinds of wood which are selected and prepared traditionally to the highest standards. She is based in Plovdiv in Bulgaria and leads tuition with assistance from her husband, Father Nedyalko, and organises one week-long icon painting courses living and working in Marchela's icon studio in Perushtica, Plovdiv and during the period of Alde Valley Spring Festival at her studio at White House Farm, Great Glemham, Suffolk.
