GAUL, John Thomas
John Thomas Gaul was born at Ipswich in 1858 and baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Ipswich on 27 June 1858, third of the five sons of James Gaul (1828-1921), an engineer, and his wife Martha née Wood, who married at Ipswich in 1854. In 1861, John was a 2-year-old, living at 1 Baker’s Gardens [Street], Ipswich with his parents, 32-year-old James, a machinist, and 25-year-old Martha, and three siblings, Robert James 5, William Archer 4 and newly born Alfred Donald (3 June 1860-27 December 1900), the whole family being born at Ipswich. In 1891, a 32-year-old artist in oils, living at 31 Christchurch Street, Ipswich with his parents, 62-year-old James, now described as an artist, and 54-year-old Martha. In 1901, still living at Christchurch Street when James was ‘living on own means’ and young John Thomas was a 42-year-old art dealer in pictures, and they were still there ten years later with John still a picture dealer. John Thomas Gaul, picture dealer, of 31 Christchurch Street, Ipswich died at Bucklesham, near Ipswich on 19 August 1913, he was unmarried. His father James Gaul is only noticed as an artist in the 1891 census, otherwise as an engineer or foundry worker.
