Sandy Larkman

As Sandra P. Scaggs, she was born at Southend-on-Sea, Essex in 1944, daughter of Gilbert Stanley Scaggs (6 September 1911-10 December 2001) and his wife Irene May née Compton (29 June 1911-1993), who married at Southend in 1935 and in 1939 were living at 69 Pentland Avenue, Shoeburyness, Southend-on-Sea. Sandra married at Southend in 1968, Keith Howard Larkman (born 1943), a solicitor, and works under the name of Sandy Larkman. Sandy trained as a teacher, teaching in schools where most lessons had an art bias. She continued studying painting and pottery in the evenings, specialising in ceramics but also studied oil and mixed media painting, and basic sculpture, taking short studies courses in ceramics at Southend School of Art and at Colchester School of Art. In 1985, she moved to the Old School House, School Green, Edwardstone, Suffolk, a house purchased from Edward Middleditch, complete with a studio. She painted for many years with the Little Cornard Art Group, also with John Charles Philip Constable at his then studio in Dedham, Essex. Sandy set up her own pottery for regular classes for students of all ages and for many years taught pottery at Salters Hall School in Sudbury and, although painting in watercolour for many years, has latterly returned to acrylics and oils. She has exhibited with her daughter, Joanna Land and her ceramics, in her studio at the School House, Edwardstone but has had many solo and shared painting exhibitions. Her paintings are in collections in the UK, Canada, USA, Australia, and Europe.
