Martin O'Shea

Martin Seamus O'Shea was born at Runcorn, Cheshire in August 1943, son of Edward William O'Shea (8 August 1910-1986), a contractors engineer & surveyor, and his wife Elizabeth Ruth née Castle (29 August 1910-2005), who married at Brentford, Middlesex in 1937 and in 1939 were living at 6 Greencroft Avenue, Ruislip, Middlesex. Martin was educated at Lower School of John Lyon at Harrow-on-the-Hill 1955-1959 and studied at the Architectural Association School 1964-1967 and is both an architect and a painter. He married at Lewes, Sussex in 1972, June Lawrence and was Chief Architect for the London Borough of Tower Hamlets 1976-1980 when he went on his own account as a specialist party-wall surveyor. His other service is that of a representational artist, undertaking commissions for paintings of landscapes, townscapes including buildings &c. and still-life. The looseness of his painting is a relief from the strict control which architectural drawing demands and he paints direct from the visual stimulation, whether landscape or still-life, a flower just cut or the wind blowing through the trees. He shares his time between his studio at 'Puddlecot', The Street, Norton, Bury St Edmund's, Suffolk and a mountain village in Spain and his work is a reflection of this, studio paintings, olive trees, meadows, and mountains. As Martin O'Shea, a member and exhibitor at the Bury St Edmund's Art Society and exhibited at Bury St Edmund's Church Walks in 2012 when sixty highly regarded professional artists as well as local artists and students generously donated their work and supported by the School of Art, West Suffolk College, all the proceeds going to St Nicholas Hospice Care.
