BATCHELOR, Kate
Katharine Dorothy Ann Batchelor was born in the Lothingland district of Suffolk in 1961, daughter of Phillip W. Batchelor and his wife Ann E. née Barnard, who married at Lothingland in 1955. A farming family with roots in the East Anglian fishing industry but drawing and painting were a strong part of her early life, and she studied on a Foundation Course at Lowestoft School of Arts and Crafts and holds a B.A. in Fine Art from Norwich University of the Arts and a Diploma in Wildlife Illustration from Dyfed College of Art in Southwest Wales from where she graduated in 1985. For many years Kate worked as a freelance illustrator, creating work for many large organisations and publications. She married in the Waveney district of Suffolk in 1986, Mark Churchman but continued to work under the name of Kate Batchelor. For the past years has concentrated on her painting career, focusing on her passion for marine and wildlife subjects painting the coastal scenes of East Anglia. Her work is based on boats and the more traditionally built fishing boats and acrylics have provided a pathway to express the beauty of the coast. Kate is a member of Suffolk Open Studios from her studio at Kern, Redisham Road, Weston, Beccles, Suffolk and exhibits regularly in East Anglia including at Mandell’s Gallery, Elm Hill, Norwich and Buckenham Galleries, Southwold. Together with her husband Mark Churchman, are the authors of 'Painting with Watercolours' (2005).
