David John Leathers

David John Leathers, was born at 147 York Road, Bury St Edmund's, Suffolk in 1940, son of Frank Harry Leathers (8 April 1905-27 November 1985), a cake & pastry maker, and his wife Marjorie Anne née Hempstead (24 December 1913-22 July 2002), who married at Bury St Edmund's in 1936. David trained as a cartographer and studied painting and drawing at West Suffolk College, working as a technical illustrator in a large organisation. Precision is the key to accurate drawing and is important as the starting point of all his work and he paints mainly in oils, but occasionally in acrylics and watercolours. Although now specialising in still-life paintings, subjects are often fruit together with silver jugs and things found in car-boot sales and antique fairs, but he continues to paint coastal scene in Suffolk or Cornwall, landscape and the occasional portrait. His paintings are built up slowly in glazes taking many sessions to complete. David exhibits widely in East Anglia including at Chimney Mill Galleries, West Stow, Bury St Edmund's and Ferini Art Gallery, Pakefield, Lowestoft and his work is in collections in Australia, USA, Ireland and Norway. He married at Bury St Edmund's in 1961, Gillian Margaret Barber and they went to live in Cambridgeshire.
