Geoff Harmer

Geoffrey Harold V. Harmer, was born at Billericay, Essex in 1927, son of Harry T. Harmer and his wife Laura Sarah née Hollingsworth, who married at Ongar, Essex in 1924. Geoff grew up in Essex spending many hours making model sailing ships from plans and drawings, from which developed a fascination with working boats, the boatyards in Maldon, the creeks and marshes and the yachts sailing in the estuaries. He studied portraiture and life drawing at St Martins College of Art & Design in London and spent most of his life as a designer and illustrator but has always painted which he turned to full-time. He left Essex, moving to Suffolk, with a studio at Park Road, Lowestoft, Geoff tried to capture the atmosphere of the beaches, with their fishing boats and huts, depicting an ongoing way of life in Lowestoft. He married at Brentwood, Essex in 1968, Janet B. Rodgers and in 2002 they lived at Wickham Market, Suffolk. He has exhibited at the Royal Society of Marine Artists and had portrait commissions from the Army as well as from individuals. He died on the 20 July 2017.
