Alyson Lomas

As Alison M. S. Cooper, she was born at Chelmsford, Essex in 1947, daughter of John C. Cooper and his wife Queenie Olive née Playford, who married at Manchester in 1939. Alyson studied at St Martinís School of Art, London, Laird School of Art, Birkenhead and gained a BA (hons) from Liverpool University and followed this with study at the Winchester School of Art and went on to lecture in Art for 17 years. She married at Chelmsord in 1968, Michael J Lomas and after spending a few years in Framlingham, Suffolk, in November 2011 she and her husband, moved to Kelso in the Scottish Borders but in 2017 moved to West Sussex. The landscapes that she paints are about felt responses to the subject, a remembered place rather than a particular place which involves covering the canvas with fluid colour and, by allowing the pigment to suggest the subject, initiating the starting point for the painting. The way the paint flows either with or against each colour creates an organic way to build the image. She has exhibited at Faith House Gallery, Dorset; Harbour Lights Gallery, Southampton; Salisbury District Hospital, Wiltshire; Pallant House Gallery, Chichester; The Art House, Westbourne, Hampshire; Buckenham Galleries, Southwold and Taplin Gallery, Woodbridge with solo shows at Buckenham Galleries, Southwold; Peter Pears Gallery, Aldeburgh and Pond Gallery, Snape. Her work features in private collections in Australia, Spain, Cayman Islands, Iceland, Greece and France. www.alysonlomas.co.uk
