SLADEN, Olive Hilary

1916 - 1984

As Olive Hilary Felton, she was born at Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands on 9 August 1916, daughter of Roy Stanley Felton (19 November 1883-5 April 1920), a sheep farmer, and his wife Muriel Hariet née Durose, O.B.E., (31 May 1884-1972), daughter of Frederick Durose (1855-1933), a schoolmaster, who married at Christ Church Cathedral, Port Stanley on 20 May 1907. On 13 April 1930, as a 13 year old, she arrived in London from the Falkland Islands and on the 8 July 1933, as a student at St Michael's School, Cirencester, she sailed for Montevideo to return to the Falkland Islands. In 1939, a probationer nurse, lodging, with two other probationer nurses, at 236 Hastings Road, Keston Mark, Bromley, Kent, the home of the Burden family. She married at Tonbridge, Kent in 1949, Francis James Sladen (16 July 1907-8 July 1971), who was born in Bengal, India, and she painted under the name Olive Hilary Sladen. Her husband died at 173 Connaught Avenue, Frinton-on-sea, Essex in 1971. Olive was a member of the Ipswich Art Club and exhibited from Goose Cottage, Quay Lane, Kirby-le-Soken, Essex in 1977, two pictures 'Bank of the Orwell, Pin Mill' and 'On the Banks of the Orwell' and in 1980 'Spring at Flatford', 'Early Snow' and 'Mud'. Olive Hilary Sladen died at Goose Cottage, Quay Lane, Kirby-le-Soken on 16 September 1984.
