EMENEY, Arthur James

1895 - 1962

Arthur James Emeney was born at Ipswich on 4 July 1895, only child of James Emeney and his wife Martha Matilda née Wallis (10 September 1864-1 February 1942), who married at Ipswich in 1894. Arthur studied at Ipswich School of Art and Science and in 1911, a 16-year-old decorator, living at 81 Foxhall Road, Ipswich with his parents. A landscape painter in oil & watercolour and, like his father, a member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club, exhibiting from 81 Foxhall Road, Ipswich in 1920 four oils, 'A Study of Chalk Pits, Tiverton, Devon', 'April Showers', 'Cloud Shadows on the Orwell' and 'The Old Mill, Ballingdon', in 1921 five oils 'Foxhall Heath, Evening', 'Heathlands', 'Evening Shadows', 'Looking Towards Ipswich from Bourne Bridge' and 'Suffolk Farmstead', in 1922 four pictures, an oil 'Martlesham Creek' and three watercolours 'Chanak Harbour, Asia Minor', 'The Orwell, Pin Mill' and 'Chelmondiston Valley' and four oils in 1923 'The Rainbow', 'A Country Lane, Rushmere', 'Passing Showers' and 'The Valley of the Stour', in 1933 two oils 'Port of Taranto, S. Italy' and 'Willie Lott's Cottage, Flatford' and 1920-1925 exhibited at least seventeen works. In 1939, an unmarried cabinet maker, living at 81 Foxhall Road, Ipswich with his widowed mother Martha. Arthur James Emeney of 67 High Street, Ipswich died at the Ipswich & East Suffolk Hospital on 18 March 1962, he was unmarried.
