STIFF, Gladys
As Gladys Burkitt she was born at Ipswich on 16 March 1913, daughter of Herbert Burkitt (19 August 1876-13 July 1954), clerk to East Suffolk County Council, and his second wife Julia Mary Reynold[s] (9 December 1876-1953), only daughter of George Reynolds of the Manor House, Capel St Mary, who married at Capel St Mary, Ipswich in April 1907, Herbert's first wife was Annie Sayers (1875-11 November 1905), whom he married at Ipswich in 1897. In 1911, the family were living at 70 Belle Vue Road, Ipswich, 34-year-old Herbert, born Boston, Lincolnshire and 34-year-old Julia with children Edith May 12, Dorothy Grace 10 and Sidney 8. In 1939, Gladys was a shorthand typist, living at 288 Felixstowe Road, Ipswich with her parents and an elder sister Muriel, later Wheeler, who was born on 7 September 1911. Gladys married in the Deben district of Suffolk in 1942, Donovan Ernest Stiff (14 May 1912-5 July 1970) and as Mrs Gladys Stiff, exhibited at the Ipswich Art Club from Villa Sandra, 7 Brownlow Road, Felixstowe, Suffolk in 1977, two pictures 'Scottish Burn, Lochlinnhe' and 'Still Life with Lemons' and in 1979 from 'Kilcot', 77 Looe Road, Felixstowe, two pictures 'Remains of a Grain Store, Thornham Harbour, Norfolk' and 'Weigela'. Gladys Stiff died at Kilcot, 77 Looe Road, Felixstowe on 24 December 1987.
