William McDowall was born on 26 October 1905. William was educated at St Mary’s Cathedral Choir School in Edinburgh and studied at Edinburgh College of Art 1932–1935 under Samuel John Peploe (27 January 1871–11 October 1935) and William George Gillies (21 September 1898–15 April 1973) and won an Andrew Grant Scholarship. After a year in a commercial studio in Edinburgh he worked in London as a commercial artist and was a graphic artist for the 'Sunday Times' 1948–1969 but continued with his own painting, exhibiting at the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Scottish Academy. He then moved to Suffolk where a member of the Ipswich Art Club and exhibited from 14a Old Barrack Road, Woodbridge, Suffolk in 1977 'Chelsea Rooftops in Autumn' and a further four pictures the following year and in 1980 exhibited four pictures' 'Roses', 'Spanish Village', 'Sardinian Coast' and 'Dubrovnik'. William McDowall died at 14a Old Barrack Road, Woodbridge on 18 March 1983.
