BARNARD, Dorothy May

1899 - 2000

As Dorothy May Underwood, she was born at 15 Bolton Lane, Ipswich on 13 January 1899, daughter of Ernest Underwood (11 October 1873-21 May 1966), a leather merchant & boot manufacturer, and his wife Thirza Olive Laura Blackwell (13 January 1873-25 November 1965), eldest daughter of James Blackwell of Burwell, Cambridgeshire, who married at the Baptist Church, Burwell on 15 September 1897. In 1901, Dorothy was a 2-year-old living at 15 Bolton Lane, with her parents 27-year-old Ernest and 28-year-old Laura, who was born Swaffham Bulbeck, Cambridgeshire but by 1911 they had moved to 72 Constable Road, Ipswich. Dorothy married at Ipswich in 1922, Russell Thomas Barnard (15 September 1896-5 April 1961), a grain merchant, and painted under the name of Dorothy Barnard. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1973-1977 and exhibited from 284 Tuddenham Road, Ipswich in 1973 three pictures, two pastels 'Ruth' and 'Xmas Roses' and a watercolour 'Vivia' and the following year exhibited two watercolours 'Wherstead Church' and 'Wallflowers'. She was still at the same address in 1977 when she exhibited a portrait 'Mrs Geoffrey Barnard'. Dorothy May Barnard died at Ipswich on 30 July 2000.
