CLARK, Elsie Constance
As Elsie Constance Wood, she was born at Long Eaton, Derbyshire on 6 January 1900, eldest daughter and second child of Albert Edward Wood (1869-14 July 1933), a lace designer & draughtsman, and his wife Gertrude Lucy née Stevenson, who married at Nottingham in 1894. In 1911, Elsie was an 11-year-old, living at 148 Derby Road, Long Eaton with her parents, 42-year-old Albert and 37-year-old Gertrude, with four siblings, Albert Frederick 15, Phyllis Norah 5, Irene Margaret 2 and Christabel Mary 1. Elsie married at St John's Church, Long Eaton on 6 August 1924, Edward Stanley John Clark (1 September 1897-22 June 1980), youngest son of Charles Ernest Clark of Ipswich, Edward was a schoolteacher, and Elsie painted under the name of Elsie Clark. In 1939, Elsie was living at 11 Corder Road, Ipswich with her husband and widowed mother-in-law. An associate member of the Ipswich Art Club 1967-1970 and exhibited from 38 Gainsborough Road, Ipswich in 1967 three sculptures 'Madonna', 'Medieval Lady' and 'Abstract' and in 1969 'Mother and Baby' white alabaster. Elsie Constance Clark died at 38 Gainsborough Road, Ipswich in 1970.
