SUTCLIFFE, Edna Mary

1888 - 1978

As Edna Mary Brogden, she was born at Ipswich on 5 February 1888, second of the five children of Richard William Brogden (1853-4 May 1921), a surgeon, and his wife Constance Mary Rhodes (1860-20 August 1938), daughter of John George Rhodes, who married at St Paul's Church, Beckenham, Kent on 5 January 1886. Edna was educated at Ipswich High School for Girls winning prizes in 1894. In 1911, a 23-year-old, living at 12 Lower Brook Street, Ipswich with her parents, 57-year-old Richard and 51-year-old Constance, with three sibling sisters, Winifred Constance 24, Hilda Rhodes 21 and Maud Skilbeck 19, all born at Ipswich. Edna married at Ipswich in 1917, Richard Francis Sutcliffe (1882-1959) and they had three children, and lived at Brook Hill, Foxhall, Ipswich. In 1939, Edna was living and working at Ipswich Sanatorium, Rendlesham, Suffolk. An associate member of the Ipswich Art Club 1961-1973 and exhibited from The White House, Grundisburgh, Suffolk in 1961, two oil paintings 'Shek's Bay, Hong Kong' and 'Woodbury Common, Devon', in 1962 she again exhibited two oils 'The Old Chalk Pit' and 'The Devon Scene'. In 1964 she exhibited from Deben Gate, 9 Ipswich Road, Woodbridge, Suffolk an oil 'On Sutton Heath' and was a regular exhibitor up until 1970 when she exhibited an oil 'Romneya'. Edna Mary Sutcliffe died at Deben Gate, 9 Ipswich Road, Woodbridge on 17 September 1978.
