RUSSELL, Joan Eleanor

1917 - 1999

As Joan Eleanor Gertrude Hartley, she was born at Makisa Street, Walney, Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire on 7 March 1917, but baptised at St Mary, Portsea, Hampshire on 5 August 1917, daughter of Frank Thomas Hartley (2 April 1887-21 March 1965), Admiralty Overseer for Gun Mountings, and his wife Eleanor Eugenie née Moth (26 July 1887-20 February 1980), who married at Portsea on 7 August 1912 and in 1939 were living at 600 Foxhall Road, Ipswich. Joan married at Ipswich in 1942, Ronald Henry Russell (6 January 1917-5 January 1985) and she painted as Joan Russell. An associate member of the Ipswich Art Club 1942-1948 and exhibited in 1942 'Irises' and in 1944 two works 'A Bunch of Summer Flowers' and 'Dedham 1944'. She died at New Forest, Hampshire on 28 October 1999.
