LILLEY, Catherine Ann

1864 - 1957

Catherine Ann Lilley was born at Kings Norton, Birmingham in 1864, daughter of James Lilley (1838-1 April 1927), a printer, and his wife Catherine née Downing (1838-1921), who married at Manningtree, Essex on 5 August 1862 by which time James was living at Stafford Lane, Harborne. In 1871, Catherine was a 6-year-old, living at Rann Street, Birmingham with her parents, 32-year-old James and 32-year-old Catherine and her younger sibling Maria 2. In 1891, they were living at 47 Kingswood Road, Kings Norton, Worcestershire when Catherine was a 26-year-old artist, with the addition to the family of 15-year-old brother James. By 1901 the family had moved to White Hall Farmhouse, Thorpe le Soken, Essex the birthplace of her father, and by 1911 Catherine and her parents had moved to Cuba House, Weeley Heath, Clacton, Essex by which time young Catherine was taking a few years off her age which was given as 40. She exhibited at the Royal Academy also showing at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and Baillie Gallery, from Moseley, Birmingham in 1887, Thorpe le Soken in 1899 and in Weeley 1906. A member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1945-1955 and exhibited from Cuba House, Weeley Heath in 1946, an oil 'Delphiniums', in 1947 two paintings 'Blythburgh Church' and 'Butterfly Roses', in 1948 an oil 'Delphiniums', in 1949 she exhibited four pictures 'The Pink Sunbonnet', 'Gladioli', 'Autumn Sunset' and 'White Roses', in 1950 she exhibited 'Delphiniums' again, also 'Pin Mill' and in 1951 two oils 'Blue and Bronze' and 'Zinnias' and was a regular exhibitor until her death. Catherine Ann Lilley was of Cuba House, Weeley Heath when she died at Myland Hospital, Mill Road, Colchester on 17 May 1957, aged 94, she was unmarried.
