SAMPSON, Janet
As Janet Hubbard, she was born at Bournemouth, Hampshire on 31 January 1896, youngest daughter of Revd Cyril Egerton Hubbard (20 November 1854-5 November 1923) and his wife Agnes Mary Scott (1862-1 May 1936), daughter of Canon Thomas Scott, vicar of West Ham, who married at West Ham Parish Church, London on 1 October 1881. In 1901, Janet was a 5-year-old, living at New Lodge, Hartfield, Sussex with her parents, 45-year-old Cyril and 38-year-old Agnes, with five siblings, Leighton Egerton 18, Gilbert Ernest 15, Alys 12, Elinor 9 and Michael Edmund 1, and they retained seven indoor servants. Janet married at West Drayton Parish Church, London on 17 August 1916, Major Samuel John Marton Sampson (11 August 1883-18 March 1961), son of Samuel Arthur Sampson of 5 Camden Hill Gardens, Kensington. Janet was an associate member of the Ipswich Art Club, exhibiting in 1934 from South Lee, Nowton Road, Bury St Edmund's, two watercolours 'Saint Paul, Bury St Edmund's' and 'The Little Ouse, near Lakenheath' and in 1948 she exhibited at the Bury St Edmund's Art Society a watercolour, 'The Incoming Tide at Walton-on-the-Naze'. In 1939 she was living at South Lea, Nowton Road, Bury St Edmunds, with her husband, a solicitor, and servants and was still living at Nowton Road, Bury St Edmund's when her husband died on 18 March 1961. Janet Sampson died at Hammersmith, London on 9 April 1968, aged 72.
