CLUTTEN, Lilly Maud
As Lilly Maud Bales, sometimes Maud[e] Lilly, she was born at Sussex Street, Norwich, Norfolk in 1871, third daughter, a second daughter Jane died young, of Frederick Bales (1842-25 July 1931), a shoe manufacturer employing 34 people, and his wife Sarah Emma née Burrows (1 February 1845-1901), who married at Norwich in 1868. In 1881, Lilly was a 10-year-old living at 10 Sussex Street, Norwich with her parents, 38-year-old Frederick and 36-year-old Sarah, and sibling sister Edith 11, but by 1891 her father had returned to his old profession as a commercial traveller and they were living at Denmark Road, Norwich. Lilly married at Norwich in 1895, Alfred Charles Clutten (1867-October 1929), shop-owner, draper & boot seller, and in 1911, 40-year-old Lilly was living at 8 Norwich Street, East Dereham, Norfolk with her 43-year-old husband, two daughters Doris Lilian 13, Margaret Mona 11, and three sons, Geoffrey Frederick 10, Charles Kingsley 9 and Arthur Ronald 6, one other child had died. Lilly's husband died at East Dereham in 1929. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1942-1945, and exhibited in 1942, probably from Stratford St Mary, Suffolk, three works 'East Budleigh, Devon', 'Lustleigh, Devon' and 'Derwentwater', six in 1943 'Penrith Castle', 'Cley Mill, Norfolk', 'Near Henley', 'Willie Lott's Cottage', 'Newby Bridge, Windermere' and 'By the Norfolk Broads', five in 1944 'A Welsh Village', 'The Bank of the Orwell', 'Wallabarrow', 'Over the Grampians' and 'Wotton, Surrey', and from Greenmead, Stratford St Mary, Suffolk in 1945, five paintings, 'Floods by the Stour', 'Cotswold Cottages, near Broadway', 'Banks of the Yare, Norfolk', 'Dedham Church, from the Stour' and 'Sunshine on the Servern'. Lilly Maud Clutten died in the Deben district of Suffolk in late 1970, aged 99.
