HAYNES, James Dudley

1894 - 1947

James Dudley Haynes was born at West Drayton, Middlesex on 13 June 1894, son of James Haynes (1861-1936), a house agent & land surveyor, and his wife Susan née Love (1856-1936), who married at West Drayton, Middlesex in 1886. As a baby he had suffered severe spinal injuries. In 1911, a 16-year-old student, living at 'Penlee', Warwick Road, West Drayton with his parents, 50-year-old George and 54-year-old Susan, and three siblings, William George 22, Margaret Ann 18 and Dora 15. James studied painting under Francis Jackson (1872-1945) and etching under Malcolm Osborne (1880-1963) and painted in and around West Drayton during the 1920s and 30s but in 1936 moved to Woodbridge and Hoxne before moving to Framlingham, all in Suffolk, teaching art at Framlingham College. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1939-1946 but had exhibited from The Old Post Office, Cross Corner, Woodbridge, Suffolk in 1937 'Crome's Mill on Mousehold Heath' and 'Birling Gap'. In 1939, an artist, living at Low Farm, Hoxne, Suffolk and he continued exhibiting at Ipswich Art Club from 21 Double Street, Framlingham in 1941 six works, 'Parham Moat Hall', 'Wingfield Castle', 'The Abbey, Hoxne', 'The Yard' and two entitled 'Framlingham Castle', in 1942 'Framlingham Castle from the Mere', 'Moat Farm, Badingham' and 'The Moat, Wingfield Castle', in 1943 'Winter Sunset', 'Framlingham Castle from North', 'Framlingham Castle from the Meres' and 'Broadwater', in 1944 'Ann', 'Framlingham Castle from the Footpath', 'Goodrich Castle' and 'C Gibson Morgan, Esq.', and three works in 1945 'Penny', 'Tower Bridge' and 'Framlingham Castle'. James also exhibited at the Royal Academy and at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and was the author of 'The Bounteous Elements' which he also illustrated and, just before his death, he painted six portraits of his family. James Dudley Haynes was of 21 Double Street, Framlingham when he died at the Ipswich & East Suffolk Hospital on 6 February 1947, aged 52, he was unmarried and died intestate. He signed his works 'J. Dudley Haynes'.
