OSBORNE, Douglas Cyril

1911 - 2012

Douglas Cyril Osborne, sometimes Cyril Douglas, was born at 11 Grimwade Street, Ipswich on 30 May 1911, son of Robert Charles Osborne (5 July 1885-28 September 1957), a furniture dealer, and his wife Mabel Jessie née Willson (8 July 1885-1965), who married at Ipswich in 1906 and in 1939 were living at 8 Warwick Road, Ipswich. Douglas spent his life in or around Ipswich as a cabinet maker, photographer or as a radio manufacturer and radio & TV dealer. He married at Ipswich in 1939, Marjorie Edith Rogers (27 October 1917-17 December 2003) and they lived at 188 Spring Road, Ipswich, their granddaughter is Lois Cordelia. After his retirement at the age of 70, when living at 27 Cauldwell Avenue, Ipswich, Douglas took up painting in oil, firstly on canvas but progressed to using board. Mostly self-taught he copied a 'still-life', which was owned by the family, progressing to making copies of pictures he found in magazines, or of photographs, before creating his own compositions of local scenes mostly in and around Suffolk. Douglas Cyril Osborne died at Ipswich on 29 July 2012, aged 101.
