KNOWLES, Violet Emily

1873 - 1960

As Violet Emily Rix, she was born at Bethnal Green, London on 11 May 1873, daughter of Thomas Julians Rix (1843-28 May 1916), a watchmaker, and his wife Mary Ann née Tarr (1844-20 January 1928), who married at Shoreditch in 1866. In 1881, Violet was a 7-year-old, living at 480 Bethnal Green Road, London with her parents, 37-year-old Thomas and 36-year-old Mary, with four siblings Annie Florence 12, Alice Julians 9, Minnie Louise 6 and Sydney Thomas 3, all born at Bethnal Green and in 1891 Violet was at the same address as a 17-year-old pupil teacher. Violet married at Bethnal Green, London in 1898, Ernest Walter Sheridan Knowles (1872-7 October 1921) and in 1911 Violet was living at 10 Durlston Road, St John at Hackney, London with her 39-year-old husband Ernest, a pawnbroker's assistant, and their 6 year old son John Ernest Marcus (1904-1928). As Mrs Violet E. Knowles she exhibited from 87 Southwold Mansions, Maida Vale, London at the London Salon in 1909 and was a member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1923-1926 from Ashfield, Gaston, East Bergholt, Suffolk but does not seem to have exhibited. In 1939, Violet Emily Knowles was a widow and a retired schoolteacher, living at 36 Parkway, Raynes Park, Merton, Surrey where she died on 25 September 1960, aged 73.
