CANT, Frank Harry
Frank Harry Cant was born at Ipswich on 15 January 1886 and baptised at St Clements Church, Ipswich on 14 March 1886, son of Harry Salmon Cant (1857-22 February 1924), a wood machinist, and his wife Sarah Ann née Chapman (1859-2 February 1924), who married at Ipswich in 1882. Frank was educated at Ipswich Higher Grade School and in 1901 joined the Post Office as a clerk and on 3 April 1902, appointed a learner telephone operator. In 1911, a 25-year-old telegraphist at the Post Office, living at 252 Rosehill Road, Ipswich with his parents, 53-year-old Harry and 51-year-old Sarah. A sapper in the Signal Section of the Royal Engineers during the First World War and saw service in France and on demobilisation commissioned into the Territorial army which he carried on for four years. His hobbies were watercolour painting and photography and was a member of the Ipswich Art Club 1922-1925 from 82 Grove Lane, Ipswich but although listed as an exhibitor does not seem to have shown. He retired from the Post Office in 1923 but in 1926 resumed as Postmaster at Wickham Market until 1936 when he took the same position at Framlingham, both in Suffolk. In 1939, an unmarried sub-postmaster, living at 6 Riverside, Bridge Street, Framlingham. Frank Harry Cant died at Framlingham in 1965, aged 79.
