GOWER, Caroline

1813 - 1883

Caroline Gower was baptised at Cheshunt, Hertfordshire on 30 June 1813, daughter of Richard Hall Gower (baptised 26 November 1767-1 July 1833), a naval man and ship designer, and his wife Elizabeth Emptage (baptised 22 August 1772-November 1840), daughter of Commodore George Emptage (1733-1785) of the Bombay marine, who married at Hertford on 6 May 1802 and lived at Cheshunt but in 1816 moved to Nova Scotia House, Wherstead Road, Ipswich. Of the five daughters and two sons of the family, in 1851 three unmarried sisters were still living at Nova Scotia House, Elizabeth 44, Sarah Rozanna 39 and Caroline 37 and they retained three indoor servants. A member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1875-1876 and in 1875, exhibited 'Clubb's Mill, near Looe, Cornwall'. Caroline Gower lived at Nova Scotia House until her death on 26 April 1883, she was unmarried and buried in Ipswich Cemetery on 1 May. One of her executors was her unmarried sister Charlotte, who died at the same address on 20 September later that year.
